NIGHT SCHOOL @ HOOD FAMOUS CAFE + BAR During Night School, Hood Famous becomes part classroom part bar after hours, where the drinks are dialed in and the conversations are flowing. THE TALK Figures like Zohran Mamdani are shaping the present as the first South Asian Muslim American mayor in NYC, but they’re part of a lineage of Asian American socialists that stretches back over a century. This session dives into the radical legacy of Asian American organizers across the last century from immigrant labor movements to anti-colonial struggles, from the Communist Party USA to broader Marxist and revolutionary traditions. Together with Seattle activists, historian Scott Kurashige recovers these stories and discuss how they advanced varying models of revolutionary praxis. Together, we’ll unpack how these communities built movements from the margins while navigating surveillance, deportation, blacklisting, and resistance both outside and within their own circles. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Scott Kurashige is the author of American Peril: The Violent History of Anti-Asian Racism and coauthor of The Next American Revolution with Grace Lee Boggs. His work sits at the intersection of race, history, and radical political thought. (signed copies of American Peril will be available for purchase at the event). Additional commentators TBA. 🕰 Come early, grab a drink, settle in. Seats are limited—RSVP required.
