Hosted by

Join us for an evening drinks and discussion while Fr Jack Custer takes us through the Psalms: Prayers that Work Doors open 6:30, speaking begins 7, followed by social hour. Food, wine, seltzer/non-alcoholic beverages for all for the duration of the event. About the topic: The Psalms were inspired specifically as poetry to be sung. They were preserved in the Temple because they had “worked” for someone. Basing ourselves in a text by St Athanasius of Alexandria (4th century), we will explore just how the Psalms can continue to work for us today, individually and liturgically. About our speaker: Fr Jack Custer is a notable Byzantine Catholic Scholar well-versed in biblical exegesis, hymnography, and homiletics. He earned a licentiate from the Pontifical Biblical Institute and a doctorate from the Pontifical Gregorian University. Most recently, he served as a research fellow at the Sheptytsky Institute for Eastern Christian Studies at the University of Toronto. Fr Jack has published 4 books on the Old and New Testaments, several volumes of biblical meditations and, most recently, an exhaustive commentary on the Akathistos Hymn to the Theotokos. He currently pastors Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic parish in Peekskill NY, and has had a long ministry in pastoring inner city and suburban parishes, and has served as dean and professor in two seminaries. Suggested donation $10-15 to cover speaker's honorarium and refreshments. Drinks included.
