🌱 Join us for a 2.1-mile sunset hike at Pal Mar East (Nine Gems), part of the John C. & Mariana Jones/Hungryland Wildlife and Environmental Area. This 3,200-acre natural area connects the Intracoastal all the way toward Lake Okeechobee and includes pine flatwoods, wet prairie, marshes, and cypress sloughs. We’ll be hiking a shortened loop (overlapping with the larger 3.7 mile trail) to fit golden hour light :) 🌅 This site sits within the Cypress Creek headwaters — one of the most important tributaries of the Loxahatchee River. 🌈 This is a 21+ queer community event centered around trans, nonbinary, & sapphic folks designed to build connection with each other and the outdoors. 🏳️‍⚧️ 📍 Meeting Point:

Indigenous communities lived, hunted, and fished in these wetlands for thousands of years. In the 1800s, Seminoles sought refuge here during the Seminole Wars, enduring what became known as “hungry times” in this difficult, waterlogged terrain. In the 1970s, developers attempted to drain and subdivide the wetlands, but the land proved too wet to sustain development. Palm Beach County later restored the area by removing roads and filling canals, allowing natural water flow to return. Today, Hungryland protects multiple native South Florida ecosystems and remains an important part of the Loxahatchee watershed. 🔎 Learn more about Hungryland here: https://wildsouthflorida.com/hungryland.slough.natural.area.html 💜 Hike Leaders:
