Join the Exiles for a cultural field trip to the Oakland Museum of California to experience Black Spaces: Reclaim & Remain. This powerful exhibition explores the braided histories of displacement, resistance, and resilience within Black American communities in Oakland and the East Bay. Through art, architecture, and archival storytelling, Black Spaces celebrates how these communities have creatively reimagined belonging and home in the face of systemic erasure.
We will gather on the front entrance steps at 6:15 PM and enter together at 6:30 PM. Look for Kara, Bennet, or Mat when you arrive so we can check you in and enter as a group.
You do not need to be an Exile to join us — everyone is welcome to learn, connect, and explore together.

Why This Matters
As Mama Vi, one of the Exiles’ Legendary Emeritus members, reminds us, “We are part of history.”
The Exiles are deeply rooted in the Bay Area’s queer and leather lineage, and history is intersectional. Last month we explored trans resistance at the site of Compton’s Cafeteria. This month we honor Black spatial imagination at OMCA.
By engaging with Black Spaces, we continue our commitment to understanding how architecture, community, and identity intertwine. We learn from those whose creative survival built the ground we now walk on.
