The National Registry of Exonerations estimates that between 2% and 10% of convictions are wrongful convictions. With over 2.3 million incarcerated individuals in the United States, the number of innocent people behind bars is anywhere from 46,000 to 230,000!
HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN?!
Come to this two hour event to learn about the terrifying phenomenon of wrongful convictions in America.
We will screen a 30 minute segment of the forthcoming film, "16 Years" by the critically acclaimed filmmaker Jia Rizvi,
about the wrongful conviction of Jeffrey Deskovic, who spent 16 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit.
After the screening, Beth Lee, whose brother was wrongfully convicted and is serving a life sentence, will moderate a panel discussion with Jeffrey Deskovic, whose foundation currently represents wrongfully convicted people, Jia Rizvi, and Jason Flom, of Lava for Good. Jason hosts the podcast Wrongful Conviction.
The panel will discuss why and how wrongful convictions happen, as well as Jeffrey Deskovic's story and his foundation's work.
