Something wonderful, and a little heartbreaking, is happening on the construction fences along Strawberry Creek. Pipevine swallowtail caterpillars have climbed the chain-link and scaffolding to form their chrysalises, with no idea they've picked the worst real estate on campus.
Here's the catch: a pipevine swallowtail can stay sealed inside its chrysalis for up to SEVEN years, waiting for its season to emerge. That's a long time to be clinging to temporary construction fencing that could come down any day.
So this Friday, we hunt. These little ones are masters of disguise, dressed up like curled dead leaves (look closely at the cover photo... would you have spotted it?). We'll comb the fences, scaffolding, and pillars, gently collect every chrysalis we find, and bring them home to safe stewardship until they're ready to fly. Every one we find is a butterfly saved.
No experience needed. Just bring sharp eyes, water, sun protection, and a sense of wonder. All ages welcome.
