The COLLEGE OF KNOWLEDGE is a FREE knowledge sharing initiative covering a wide range of subjects and ideas for the curious at heart. I'm SWAMPRAT (a.k.a. Zachariah Beaver), a hip hop beatmaker/producer based in New Cumberland, PA. I create beats by sampling (i.e. taking parts of existing musical recordings, chopping them up, and creating new compositions - like an audio collage). In this class, we will be making beats by sampling vinyl records. Here's how: - As a group, we will pick out records to sample from (I will bring a good selection, but feel free to bring a couple records of your own). - We will listen through them to find a good section to sample from, sample the audio into the MPC (sampler/beat machine), chop up the samples and create a beat from scratch! We will go through this process several times, and try to make sure everyone can provide some input into the creative process (whether that's choosing records, pointing out a good sample section, input on how to chop up or arrange the sample, speeding up or slowing down the sample, what the drums should sound like, etc). After the seminar, I will put some finishing touches on the beats and then send them to all the attendees. Location: Timmons Team, 324 Market Street, New Cumberland, PA, 17070
