What happens when Latin America meets South Asia? You get the iconic Jackson Heights, Queens in NYC. We're bringing together Latin American & South Asian communities at The World's Borough Bookshop for an afternoon of heart-opening cultural exchange, celebration & mouth-watering fusion (you'll see what we mean!) Think... - Iced Dulce De Leche Filter Kaapi (India’s most iconic coffee beverage with a Latin American twist) - Cold Brew with beans from Tamil Nadu, topped with Lucuma cold foam (a South American super fruit) - Chicha Morada (a Latin American, caffeine free purple corn drink) by local Peruvian small business - Paletas (ice cream!) - Desi Chaat Corner by Maa Ka Dhaba - Both traditional and fusion desserts - Musical hits from both regions (dancing encouraged in the outdoor space!) - Cumbia, salsa, bhangra, bollywood Through our event, Jackson Heights in a Cup, we're celebrating the way that immigrants come together all over the world & add their love, dedication & sparkle to the communities that become their new homes. First and second generation immigrants from Latin America & South Asia have made Jackson Heights, Queens truly ICONIC. Who's in? RSVP so our families can cook & bake accordingly <3 About the organizers: * The World's Borough Bookshop: The World's Borough Bookshop's shelves are dedicated to BIPOC writers. Their mission is to create a safe & inclusive space for everyone to discover, read & celebrate diverse literature. Despite the size of Queens, NYC, there are few bookstores - leaving many areas as book deserts. * Pilas Cafe: "Pilas" means "batteries" in Spanish and is a nod to founder Ellie's childhood nickname and her heritage's influence on her cafe concept! Her cafe is especially known for her alfajores, a South American sweet treat, & her Dulce De Leche latte. * Pitara Co: Pitara Co sources South Indian coffee, grown in lush biodiverse nature & wildlife reserves by primarily indigenous, native farmers. Pitara's Five Stories light roast is grown by 5 couples from the Soliga indigenous community & the Kith & Kin medium roast is grown by farmers of the Irula & Kurumba indigenous communities. Pitara Co also sells a "Kaapi blend" based on Traditional South Indian Filter Coffee (a drink equally ubiquitous as masala chai in South India). www.pitaraco.com
