Eurocentric and racialized beauty standards have fueled aggressive marketing of toxic Black beauty and personal care products including hair relaxers, straighteners, dyes, skin lighteners, deodorants, and feminine hygiene products. And Black women represent a highly sought after customer demographic: Spending more than $7.5 billion annually on beauty products and nine times more on hair products than the average consumer.
Please join us for A Beauty Justice Fireside Chat, at the beautiful Blackbird House in Culver City, featuring a provocative and engaging panel discussion exploring the harmful chemicals commonly found in beauty and personal care products marketed to Black women and girls—and what we can do to shift the paradigm – and politics - that perpetuate the problem.
This discussion will explore what the science tells us about disproportionate health risks facing Black women, including increased risks of breast and ovarian cancer, uterine fibroids, reproductive harm, and more. We’ll examine how culture and laws are shaping the landscape—and spotlight leading Black-owned beauty brands that are transforming the industry and advancing a cleaner, healthier vision of Black beauty.
Together, we’ll discuss solutions at every level—from the personal choices consumers make to the policy changes needed to protect public health and advance beauty justice.
1:00 p.m. – Doors Open
1:30 p.m. – Program Begins (promptly)
We hope you’ll join us for this important conversation at the intersection of beauty, health equity and racial justice!
