Amateur Hour | Strings Gathering w. Alexis Mahler

Second Story Studios Presents... Amateur Hour with Alexis Mahler Sunday May 17th 11:00am-12:30pm $35 drop-in fee A low-stakes, monthly gathering for adult amateur string players (violin, viola, cello, bass) looking to play with others! Every third Sunday at Second Story Studios! Drop in as you can. Scholarships available. :) The word “amateur” comes from the French amour, meaning love, and the Latin amatorem, meaning “lover” or “friend.” Amateur musicians were once valued as essential members of society, playing not for status or prestige but simply for the joy of playing music. That's the whole point, isn't it? We find nourishment and connection through music. It’s meant to be loved and shared. Join us as we celebrate that, imperfectly, together. Note reading required. Music will be sent out in advance and we will spend the hour rehearsing in an ensemble. Instruments: Instruments are not provided. I recommend Kennedy Violins or David Kerr for an easy rental program! ||| About Alexis: Alexis Mahler has been teaching violin, viola, and cello in Portland for ten years, and runs her own private studio where she works with students of all ages and levels of experience. She is also a teaching artist with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, and assists in the public school orchestra programs in Portland and Vancouver. In addition to teaching, Alexis enjoys an abundant life as a performer. A songwriter, session player, and accompanist for local artists, playing music with her friends and students is her favorite thing. Alexis holds a Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance and Music Education from Lawrence University.
