We will talk about her journey from Navy brat in Okinawa, Japan to the real life return to Compton, CA after the Watts Riots, where she received her first introduction to the Harp. A 21-year wait, welfare, and the experience of the crack epidemic ensued before the Harp dream became a reality. Tix: $25 at the door All proceeds benefit OPC‘s Black Girls Play program. An entry code will be sent to all RSVPs at 2 PM the day of the event. ABOUT DESTINY Destiny Muhammad is a recording and performing artist, bandleader, composer, and producer whose distinctive voice on the harp bridges jazz, global traditions, and storytelling. Describing her genre as “Celtic to Coltrane,” Muhammad creates cool, eclectic soundscapes that transform jazz standards and original compositions into soulful musical journeys. Praised by the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival for turning every piece into “a soulful adventure,” she is recognized by SFJAZZ as a “masterful, exploratory musician.” While inspired by the spiritual innovations of Alice Coltrane, Muhammad brings her own contemporary melodic sensibility to the harp, performing both solo and with ensembles that highlight her expressive, genre-crossing artistry.
