Moorea Masa:
Songs have always been there for Moorea Masa (pronounced More-ray-uh Mah-sa), being raised in the musical mecca of Portland, Oregon. The daughter of an Italian immigrant father and an Black mother born abroad, this singer/songwriter/guitarist has been making music for as long as she can remember. At fifteen, she was already looking for chances to perform by sneaking into local clubs, where she was lovingly adopted into the vibrant community of Portland musicians. Moorea has toured the world and shared a stage with artists k.d Lang, Allen Stone, Big Wild, Rachael Price (Lake Street Dive) The Motet, El Vy, Nick Waterhouse, headlined tours in Europe, and supported other artists including Corrine Bailey Rae, Emily King, Lawrence, The Dip, Lady Wray, Bernhoft and many more.
Emily Elbert:
Emily Elbert is a Texas-raised, California-dwelling songwriter who sings from the intersection of self and spirit. With her new single, “God is Change,” she explores unceasing cycles of life and death, arriving at a deep sense of surrender. The song’s confessional quality balances raw psychedelic soul with Laurel Canyon folk, and a titular nod to sci-fi author Octavia Butler. “Feed my form into the flame / knowing I’ll be born again,” Elbert offers - lyrics that grew in poignant intimacy when wildfires ravaged her home and adopted hometown of Altadena. Through tragedy, however, Emily’s music retains its center, finding balance between the reverent and rebellious; the Earthly and ethereal; soul-searching while softly secure in itself.
Emily has honed her artistic practice on the road, playing over a thousand independent solo shows from Peru to Palestine, and opening for songwriters like Norah Jones and Emily King. But she has also become a sought-after musical collaborator, playing in the touring bands of luminary artists Leon Bridges, Jacob Collier, Esperanza Spalding, Jenny Lewis, and Amos Lee - and performing with the likes of Beyoncé, Gwen Stefani, Sara Bareilles, and Lorde. All of these experiences feed into her music today. Anchored by what L.A. Weekly calls a “funky, engrossing groove,” the publication notes, "Elbert would be considered remarkable just for her guitar playing, which segues from hard-edged funk and blues to more gently subtle jazz intricacy. But she’s an equally adept vocalist, weaving her soulful phrasing nimbly within the rhythms of her guitar chords.” Upon the release of her most recent LP, Woven Together, PopMatters remarked, “though it would be safe to call her a spiritual successor to Joni Mitchell, Elbert is truly a chameleonic composer…this is Emily Elbert, a name to bookmark.”
