Thirty years ago, a gathering of Black men dared to imagine another way of being with one another and with the world. The 1996 Black, Male & Feminist/Womanist Conference at Morehouse College created space for conversations rooted in courage, accountability, and a deep commitment to ending sexism as part of the larger struggle for Black freedom.
This symposium is an invitation to remember, to learn, and to continue that unfinished work.
Together we will honor the legacy of Black Men for the Eradication of Sexism (BMES) by revisiting the ideas, relationships, and organizing that helped reshape conversations about Black masculinity, feminism, and collective liberation. Through archival materials, storytelling, scholarship, and dialogue, we will preserve a history that deserves to be known and ensure it remains available to future generations.
We also gather to imagine what comes next. Across generations, we will explore how love, justice, and shared responsibility can guide new forms of leadership. We will celebrate those who came before us while making room for young organizers, scholars, artists, and community builders who are carrying this work forward in their own time.
This is a living conversation. A place to reconnect with old friends, build new relationships, wrestle with difficult questions, and affirm that the work of transforming ourselves is inseparable from the work of transforming our communities.
Whether you attended the original conference or are encountering this history for the first time, your presence matters. Come help preserve a legacy, deepen a movement, and shape the future.
