Join the playwright and an expert from the Free Expression Project of the Center for Democracy and Technology on Wednesday, September 17 for an IRL Social Media Theater and Policy Salon event on Digital Safety hosted by Theater Alliance
This event pairs a new play, “Drink in Moderation,” by DC-based playwright Ben Hatt, which explores the messy world of social media content moderation, with a public conversation on how to ameliorate the digital world’s harmful impacts on individuals and communities in DC and beyond.
Under the rubric of this play, the Salon explores the experience of a content moderator and how he contends with the day-to-day consumption of traumatic material, then uses this story to pose questions about society’s relationship with social media and the content we consume. The play will let attendees experience going from 0 to 100 mph into a bewildering digital world, with unclear and shifting guidelines.
The performance will be followed by a civic dialogue with the playwright, advocates, and experts. This conversation will highlight both individual choices and broader policy options to mitigate the harms of the web and social media, while also leveraging technology to raise up new, diverse, emerging voices. The discussion will also discuss how DC elders (especially those with grandchild and child rearing responsibilities) and young people experience digital interactions.
This Theater and Policy Salon series has been in development for years and yet recent events reinforce the timely and enduring need to interrogate our relationship with social media. Conversations like these require respectful and welcoming discussions about complex issues that defy simple solutions.
The event is part of the larger Theater and Policy Salon Digital Safety series that includes workshops, play performances, and civic dialogues at prominent think tanks and at other locations around DC.
This program is supported by a grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
