Sea Dax's Remember We Must Live reimagines the tradition of memento mori, shifting its focus from the inevitability of death to the urgency of survival. In response to the ongoing erasure and demonization of trans lives, Dax blends contemporary symbols, personal iconography, and art historical structures to reframe remembrance as an active practice - asserting that survival, visibility, and archive-building are acts of resistance.
Working across painting and mixed media, Dax constructs layered compositions that feel at once intimate and symbolic, drawing from both personal experience and broader cultural narratives. Familiar motifs of mortality are recontextualized through present-day ephemera, queer visual language, and references to domestic and devotional traditions. In these works, objects are charged with meaning: fragments of daily life transform into markers of presence, memory, and self-definition.
Rather than memorializing what has been lost, the work resists disappearance by accumulating traces-images, symbols, and gestures that refuse to be erased. In doing so, Dax builds a visual archive not only of self, but of a broader community, creating space for recognition, continuity, and future memory.
