Celebrating 50 Years of Hip Hop

Date: Thursday 10 August 2023 Time: 15:30 - 21:00 Location: The Tabernacle, 34-35 Powis Square, London, W11 2AY Curated by Linett Kamala, the event promises an exhilarating journey through the rich history of hip hop and sound system culture at Notting Hill Carnival over the past five decades. The attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a dynamic lineup of activities, like DJ workshops, beatboxing and turntable demonstrations, as well as performances from 3:30pm to 9:00 pm. The program will kick off with an "Introduction to DJing" workshop coached by Terry Ryan, On The Rise DJ Academy founder, and the talented Esi, from KISS FM. The workshop will be a great opportunity for participants to learn and hone their DJ skills. Furthermore, the event marks the official launch of the Lin Kam Art Sound System Futures 2023 cohort, a pioneering initiative dedicated to nurturing the next generation of sound system leaders at Notting Hill Carnival. Linett Kamala, a ground-breaking figure in the music industry and one of the first female DJs to perform at Notting Hill Carnival in 1985, will be introducing this year’s cohort. For the first time in nearly 35 years, there will be a reunion of the original members (Lewis, Max, Herbie, CJ, Danny, KC, Mark, Maurice, Steve & Lloydie) of Mastermind Roadshow with a Q&A. It will be a rare opportunity to meet the team who mixed the classic ELECTRO albums and founders of Mastermind Roadshow, one of Notting Hill Carnival's most respected sound systems. Pioneer DJ will be showcasing their latest innovation, the PLX-CRSS12 - the world’s first digital-analog hybrid turntable - during a special demonstration by the award-winning turntablist, Mr Switch. U.K. beatboxing innovator Killa Kela will showcase his incredible skill in this pillar of Hip Hop. To close the event, the renowned DJ 279 and Damien ‘TDA’ Anayasi, Director of B-Better Street-styles Dance Company will host a dance jam. Please note that spaces are limited!
