Who Writes the Rules for AI, Tech Oligarchs or Voters? With Alex Bores - Candidate for NY-12 - #NYTechWeek

A live conversation with Alex Bores, congressional candidate for NY-12. AI is not being built in a vacuum. It’s emerging amid economic and social dynamics that follow their own logic, regardless of what society really wants. Whoever takes the lead wins, so no one can afford to slow down, and everyone cuts corners to avoid falling behind. The gains are private, but costs are public: chatbots linked to teen suicides, mass surveillance and autonomous killer drones, with the companies building them doing their best to skirt liability. Models rushed out the door with safety testing treated as an afterthought. A small handful of firms are pooling resources to ensure the public has no say in regulation. These are textbook coordination traps. Everyone would be better off with basic guardrails, but no single company will slow down first, and no single person is powerful enough to make them. This is exactly how incentives drive action in a permissionless environment and how concentrated power wins by default. Alex Bores is a Member of the New York State Assembly, representing the 73rd District, and serves as the Chair of the New York Future Caucus. He is also a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives to represent New York's 12th Congressional District. He supports one of the strongest proposals for AI regulation in the country, the RAISE Act. For that, a nine-figure super PAC backed by some of the biggest names in tech made him their first target, spending millions to stop his run for Congress. They’re on the record saying they want to make an example of him, to deter anyone from standing in their way. Join us midday on June 4 to hear from Alex himself. We'll start with the dynamics: why the unfettered development of AI is likely to produce outcomes almost no one wants, and how Bores's race highlights a key aspect of this dangerous dynamic. Alex will join live to talk about the fight he's in and what's actually at stake. Then we get practical: a coordination game with your fellow attendees, and concrete steps ordinary people can take to build the kind of leverage money can't simply outspend. Featuring Alex Bores (NY-12), plus [speaker TBD] and [speaker TBD].
