Second Story Studios Presents... Showing Up for the Miracle A 4-Week Songwriting Workshop with Laura Gibson Wednesday evenings in July (starting July 8) July 8, 15, 22, 29 7:00-8:30pm $150 - via venmo *sliding scale scholarships available (see link to apply!) ||| About the workshop: This workshop will approach songwriting as a practice of paying attention—to the world, to our relationships, to our instincts and our longings. Over four weeks, we'll explore the mechanics of putting words to music, as well as the deeper, stranger questions of meaning and connection. What exactly do we want our songs to do? What makes certain lyrics moving? In a combination of lecture, discussion, prompts and assignments, we will look to other artists and thinkers, and to our own lived experiences for wisdom and inspiration. The ultimate goal is to leave our time together with new material and a lot of motivation. The final class will be an open mic session. All levels are welcome. ||| About Laura Gibson: Laura Gibson is an internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer and writer NPR calls “a boundlessly wise and warm interrogator”. With a love of traditional folk music and a bent toward experimentation, she has performed on four continents and had the distinct honor of playing the very first (and 200th) NPR Tiny Desk Concert. Pitchfork says, “She has this uncanny way of drawing you into her ruminations, making you connect with her emotionally”. Between albums three and four, Gibson earned an MFA in fiction writing from Hunter College, completing her thesis in the back of a tour van. Her essays have appeared in Talkhouse, the Los Angeles Review and Oregon Humanities Magazine, and she was a 2020 recipient of the McElheny Award from MIT for her work the Timber Wars podcast.
