This is an homage to quilting and its long, rich history — but it is also an extension beyond. Artists in this show draw on the analysis and vernacular of textiles while exploring a range of mediums: painting, sculpture, installation, digital media, ceramics, found materials, and classic or hybrid forms. Through these works, quilted thinking becomes a lens — awake to dedication, repetition, delicacy, friction, and guidance.
The word “quilt” comes from the latin word Culcita, meaning a cushion or mattress. The practice of quilting, however, predates the word. An origin of comfort, support, and survival. Holding body weight(s), — quilting began in function and became language.
The “quilt” becomes more than an object — it becomes a tool, a metaphor, and a map. A soft architecture for holding what we cannot hold alone— an architecture of adaptation.
