What Do You Mean? Songwriting Workshop w. J.E. Sunde

Second Story Studios Presents... 'What Do you Mean?' An exploration of how we communicate meaning in our songs Songwriting Workshop with J.E. Sunde Sunday, July 26 3-6pm $100 limited to 15 students *sliding scale scholarships available ||| About the workshop: Does art have to mean anything? Do songs? In this workshop we will look closely at whether meaning needs to be communicated in our songs, who’s responsible for what is communicated, and five different lyrical and musical approaches to meaning communication in songs. We will listen closely to songs by different artists that exemplify these approaches and consider how we might incorporate them in our own songwriting. This conversation will be followed by an opportunity to share works in progress, with the option to invite comments and critique. The workshop is open to all ability levels. Bring a song that you’d like to share, an instrument to perform it on or a recording to listen to, and printed lyrics to distribute to the other workshop participants. ||| About J.E. Sunde J.E. Sunde (Jonathan Edward Sunde) is a songwriter and composer based out of Minneapolis, MN. Jon studied western classical music with a vocal emphasis at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. Starting in college, Jon spent ten years making beautifully unusual music with The Daredevil Christopher Wright. He has since released four solo records with his most recent record, “Alice, Gloria and Jon,” released in 2023. With a love of songwriters and performers like Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone, and Paul Simon, Jon writes densely poetic songs with a bent toward the philosophical. Also, his voice sounds like some sort of weird angel. ||| To reserve your spot, follow the instructions to pay via venmo *AND* RSVP on the partiful app. You will receive an email about a week before the workshop with more information including our NE Portland address, as long as you RSVP correctly.
