about the exhibition: historically, emblemata were short political or moral epigrams paired with decorative imagery. the alluring, intricate images made its verse more appealing to readers, and decoding emblemata became an activity debated in communion. thus, ideology that otherwise would have lived solely within the mind of the reader became a means of exchange and fellowship among neighbors.
for alter space’s inaugural exhibition, we brought together artworks by contemporary artists whose practices engage with geopolitics, ecology, and municipal systems to make colossal – and timely – matters of the human condition deeply intimate. the selected artists use semiotics and surrealism to imbue critical subjects with ambiguity; not to dilute their impact, but to invite exchange and open channels of understanding.
