It’s the thing we reach for before we even know we're reaching. It accompanies (haunts?) our waking moments, and many of our sleeping one. It’s our trusty tool. Our worst addiction. The rectangle we just can’t quit. It’s our best friend.
April 29, Tillage is hosting something rarer than sunshine in the Sunset in August: a tech-free art experience.
Come meet Matthew Stansell, the painter behind Best Friends Illuminated, featuring people on their phones + nighttime scenes of SF.
His paintings don't scold. They linger. They ask you to pause, be present, and perhaps to notice something different. To see something new amidst a familiar scene.
When you arrive, you'll be handed a printed guide — poetry, provocations, & quiet questions to ponder as you engage with the art.
Pour a drink. Sit with the paintings. Sit with yourself. Then find a neighbor and compare notes: the conversations waiting for you here are the ones that only happen IRL. Which means (and we absolutely mean this), no phones allowed. Leave your phone at home or check it in at the door. No, we won’t strip search you if you try to sneak your phone inside, but do you really want to be that person?
This event is free and open to the neighborhood. Our little gift to San Francisco.
Space is intentionally limited so pre-registration is required.
Come be illuminated.
