I’m throwing a party on Wednesday, September 9th to celebrate the publication of Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It’s the inaugural title from Open Editions, the indie publishing house coming out of Open Book Club. Stop by the Open Book Club Studio at 80 Bowery to discover the lost feminist utopia for yourself. I first learned of it in the afterword of I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman. There, Sophie Mackintosh proposes that the all-female society in Harpman’s novel is a subversion of the one in Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Craving more, I went in search of this land. Gilman imagines Herland as a society free of war, conflict, and domination. From how children are raised to how laws are updated, the women of Herland have created a world radically different from our own. On the surface, Herland is an interesting thought experiment; however, if we push past the humor of three inadequate men exploring a society of women wearing comfortable clothes with pockets, the book holds a mirror up to us and asks: Are we satisfied with the society we have created? What would it take to change? First published in 1915, this novel has been reproduced by Open Editions with no edits to the original text. At times, the language and ideas are outdated and problematic, but then, so are some of our own. You’re in for a trip.
