🤔 What's This All About? In 2023, CPD stopped more than 535,000 drivers - a massive increase in stops since 2015, when CPD reported stopping about 85,000 drivers. We're gathering to teach drivers and passengers their legal rights during traffic stops in our neighborhoods, especially our Black and Brown community members in Chicago, where Black, white and Latino populations are roughly equal, but traffic stops of Black drivers in 2022 were more than four times that of whites and more than twice that of Latinos. 👥 Who's Behind This? Real Talk Panel: Hear from local organizers and experts who've spent decades pushing for reform, including Alden Loury (WBEZ), Joi Imobhio (Impact For Equity), and Jose Manuel Almanza (Equiticity) Get Involved: Learn your rights, share your story, and cook up some ideas for change Legal Squad: Get some one-on-one time with First Defense Legal Aid lawyers who've got your back Lunch & Mingle: Fuel up with provided lunch and connect with other awesome humans fighting for change Come hear from experts on frequently asked questions such as: What should I do when I first see the police lights? Where should I stop/pull over? Where should I keep my documents? Do I have to answer questions beyond identifying information? Can the police search my car? What are key phrases to use? Is it worth it to get a security camera for my car? "How do I file a complaint or commendation? "What if English isn't my first language? 💪 Why Should You Care? Because it's time to stand up and be heard! We're talking about unfair traffic stops, how to protect yourself if it happens to you, and how we can change the game.
