Tender Loops is a project centered on the creative reimagination of traditional craft techniques, such as knitting and crochet, while embracing a mindful approach to material development and the longevity of physical objects. Through this initiative, we designed and developed an art installation paired with educational programming to advance innovative approaches to sustainable material creation. A key focus of the project was the development of bioyarn, crafted using algae-based biopolymers to create ephemeral fashion statement pieces that can be worn or displayed as sculptural works of art. Each piece reflects a deep dive into textile innovation, blending natural resources with techniques inspired by molecular gastronomy. We also explored an array of vibrant pigments, ranging from food-safe ingredients to bacteria-derived hues, to further connect materials to sustainable and ecological processes. This project is supported by the 2024 Support for the Artist Grant awarded by the New York State Council on the Arts. About the Artist Anastasiya (Nastya) Yatsuk is an artist, materials researcher, and creative biologist based in Brooklyn. Her work merges ecological responsibility with technological innovation, aiming to shape sustainable futures through inventive manufacturing practices and community-driven initiatives.
