Join Kim to learn the basics of American Mahjongg, a 4-player tile game that originated in China and was popularized in the US in the 1920s. The goal is to be the first get to get a winning 14-tile sequence or “mahjongg”. American Mahjong follows the lead of the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) which was formed in 1937 to standardize the rules for American Mahjongg and publishes an annual card of winning hands.
The session will be interactive and fun, and you will leave understanding the tiles, the NMJL card, and the flow of play. ***A second class is recommended for those wanting to play independently.
Content:
Instruction from the very basics – the tiles, reading the NMJL card, picking a hand, and how to deal. We will end with an open-hand game.
Sounds simple? Sort of, and yet complicated enough to keep you interested in playing for a long time. This class is perfect for anyone new to the game or players who have been out of the game for a long time.
Cost: $115/person. Minimum of 4 people for class to run.
*Fee includes American mahjongg materials to be used in the class and instruction, coffee or tea and a pastry. Additional food is available for purchase.
