Join us on Friday, August 8th, for the opening reception of Touched by Fire, presented by Sentro Filipino. How does one make sense of the cognitive dissonance of simultaneous hope and despair? What happens within us when we struggle to open up despite a desperate longing for connection? Where does fear live in the body? In his latest collection of paintings, Touched with Fire, Tanza J. Solis brings these complex internal states to life with his signature blend of vibrant colors, swirling brushstrokes, and symmetrical compositions. The inner life of a body caught in the crosshairs of oppressive, colonial systems is marked by ambiguous grief, cognitive dissonance, looming threats of violence, and apocalyptic futures. The images that emerge from exploring these emotional landscapes are raw, intense, and emotionally confrontational — yet ruminatory, meditative, and spiritually composed. These electrifying paintings invite you to let your mind and eyes wander and take an unflinching look at worlds within.
