Part of California Climate Action Counts Month & the Climate Action Microgrant program. EcoPress Sacramento will host "Plastic to Purpose: Sacramento Climate Action Day", a large-scale volunteer service event during California Climate Action Counts Month (September 2026). The event will mobilize 75+ volunteers to remove litter and plastic waste from William Land Park while educating participants about proper recycling practices, plastic pollution, and the circular economy. By combining hands-on environmental stewardship with community education, the project will create measurable climate benefits and empower residents to take continued climate action in their daily lives. Volunteers will begin with a brief orientation covering safety procedures, waste sorting, and the environmental impacts of plastic pollution. Participants will then work in teams to conduct a coordinated cleanup of the outside of Fairytale Town, throughout William Land Park, and surrounding public spaces. Teams-of-2 will collect litter, separate recyclable materials from landfill waste, and take note of the types of materials recovered. Following the cleanup, (10am-11am; optional!) volunteers will return to a central staging area where collected materials will be weighed, documented, and sorted. EcoPress staff and trained volunteers will identify recyclable plastics (including HDPE (#2), LDPE (#4), and polypropylene (#5)) that can be diverted from the waste stream and prepared for local reuse. Participants will learn how recovered plastic can be transformed into durable products through community-scale recycling and manufacturing, reinforcing the value of keeping materials in circulation rather than sending them to landfills. Throughout the event, volunteers will engage in educational activities focused on reducing contamination in recycling systems, avoiding "wishcycling," reducing single-use plastics, and supporting a circular economy. Participants will leave with practical actions they can take at home and within their communities to reduce waste and improve recycling habits. The anticipated climate outcomes include: - Engaging 75 volunteers in meaningful climate action. - Removing an estimated 500–750 pounds of litter from public spaces. - Diverting approximately 200–300 pounds of recyclable plastic from landfill disposal through proper sorting and preparation for local reuse. - Improving community awareness of waste reduction, recycling best practices, and plastic pollution prevention. - Preventing litter and plastic waste from entering local waterways and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing virgin plastic materials. Success will be measured through volunteer participation, volunteer service hours, pounds of litter collected, pounds of recyclable plastic diverted, and educational engagement. EcoPress Sacramento will document the event with before-and-after photographs, waste audits, volunteer sign-in records, and material weight logs. These metrics will demonstrate both the immediate environmental improvements and the project's contribution to building a more informed and engaged community committed to long-term climate action. By bringing together residents, families, students, and local partners, Plastic to Purpose: Sacramento Climate Action Day will strengthen community stewardship while creating tangible environmental benefits that extend beyond a single day of service. The event aligns with California's climate goals by reducing waste, promoting resource conservation, and inspiring continued volunteerism and sustainable behavior throughout the Sacramento region. Purpose The service project is a part of the Climate Action Microgrant program which expands climate service opportunities throughout the state of California. These projects connect state and local climate projects that engage volunteers in their community. All volunteers will join the Climate Action Counts campaign, to stay connected on future opportunities to stay engaged in this important work.
