Juneteenth (short for "June Nineteenth") is a federal holiday in the United States, celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the end of slavery. It marks the day in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the freedom of the last remaining enslaved African Americans –two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
PARADE ROUTE: from East Washington Heights Baptist Church to Randle Circle Park (intersection of Branch Ave SE and Massachusetts Ave SE). 12 pm-ish finish.
