Change My View IRL - fourth edition
A fourth edition of Change My View IRL!
CMV IRL is a version of the subreddit r/changemyview, adapted to in-person. The event is for anyone who wants to practice updating their views in a low stakes, chill environment. The idea is to expose yourself to new perspectives and ideas, practice mental flexibility, and maybe just maybe update a view.
********** HOW IT WORKS:
Guests anonymously submit their views on a variety of topics prior to the event. The hosts will curate a selection of views and circulate them in advance.
At the event, everyone stands in an open room and the host reads out a view. Guests then decide where they initially stand on the topic by moving to one of several areas of the room: agree, somewhat agree, not sure, somewhat disagree, disagree.
Guests then have an opportunity to articulate why they’ve chosen their stance. If others find their reasoning compelling, they show they’ve updated their view by changing positions in the room.
Some simple ground rules are established at the outset to make this as enjoyable as possible. This is for funs and lols and oooh!s; we aim to stay away from super hot button issues.
We also do a practice run or two to get warmed up.
********** WAYS TO PARTICIPATE:
- You can just listen and practice quietly updating your views
- You can practice articulating your views
- You can sit out for rounds you aren't interested in
- You can sit out for rounds if you didn't wear your orthotics and your lower back hurts from standing
Example views:
“Once it becomes possible (and affordable) to exercise some choice over the traits of our babies, we will have a moral obligation to do so, choosing traits like IQ and self-control that give our children the best chance at a good life.”
“If another person gives you a bad vibe for no apparent rational reason, you should still listen to that feeling because it is probably correct.”
“Old people’s votes should count less”

This event welcomes anyone interested in viewpoint diversity. If you have any questions or requests, reach out to one of the hosts.
Doors open at 3pm and the game will begin ~ 3:15pm. There will be a break in the middle, and you’re welcome to stick around and hang out after the game is done.
Feel free to bring snacks!
