Candelora: Queer Devotion to the Black Madonna

For Summer Within Substack Paid Subscribers: (note: this is an online event!) For thousands of years, third gender people in the south of Italy have processed up to the sacred mountain of the earth goddess Cybele in honor of the coming light of spring. For thousands of years my ancestors have danced and sung and played music in devotion to Her. With the rise of Catholicism, this mountain became known as Montevergine, and the goddess Cybele became known as Mamma Schiavona, dark interceding mother of Jesus Christ. The third gender people became known as the femminielli. Come honor this holy day with the Summer Within famiglia with prayer, storytelling, and community connection. You'll learn about the sacred ancient legacy of third gender people in Naples. You'll hear the legends told about Mamma Schiavona and how her miracles saved two gay lovers from death. You'll get a taste of the work of the musicians and performers who are carrying this tradition forward. You'll hear from people who have traveled to Naples as part of the Sacred Gender Pilgrimage work led by Summer Minerva. Participation and engagement encouraged!
