We are so excited to be hosting our 3rd annual Shabe Yalda with Middle East Cafe and Dr. Persis Karim! Join us at Middle East Cafe as we celebrate the longest night of the year with delicious food, music, poetry, and traditional board and card games. We will also have an open mic for poetry led by Dr. Persis Karim. All Shabe Yalda refreshments and dinner will be available for purchase. A little bit about the event: Shabe Yalda, Yalda Night, has been celebrated from ancient times in Iran, Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and many of the other countries surrounding. A night celebrated to mark the winter solstice, the longest night of the year and the rebirth of the sun, as the days start to get longer. Shabe Yalda symbolizes hopes for longer days and the triumph of light over darkness. During the holiday, family and friends gather around to read poetry, most famously from Hafez and take the time to reflect. We acknowledge that these are trying times for many and we hope to be able to create a space to come together to heal through poetry and community - in hopes of better brighter days ahead and the triumph of good (light) over evil (darkness). ** Yara: The Community Project is a passion project aimed to encourage intercultural communication and connection, to build bridges, and break stereotypes. As two Iranian Americans and children of immigrants, we noticed a lack of community spaces for us to connect with one another, and celebrate our cultures and identities. We are a community project that aim to bring communities together through social events, holidays, book club, education workshops, and more. We aim to learn, connect and heal through culture. As we continue to witness global turmoil, we find the need for unity more important than ever. Our hope is to create a space we never had and/or always longed for our SWANA and children of immigrants communities that is open and inclusive to all.**
