in conjunction with Nexus: SF/Bay Area Black Arts Week @NexusSFBay @MoADsf @mightymightystudios @selenarosescott Join us for the opening reception of ‘Intimations of Ignition’, a solo exhibition of paintings and mixed media works by British artist Selena Scott. This exhibition explores the endurance of the Black psyche. Drawing from William Wordsworth’s ‘Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood’ and James Baldwin’s ‘The Fire Next Time’, ‘intimations’ are reimagined through a racial lens and ‘ignition’ as a form of destruction and salvation. What happens to our rose-tinted view of the world as we age? How does optimism survive within systems designed to extinguish it? Moving between the mourning of lost innocence and the forging of power from pain, these works consider what it means to remain hopeful in our society.
