For Black History Month, I wanted to center this gathering around community, and what better way than a cookout. In Black life, cookouts have always been more than food; they’re where culture, music, stories, and presence live. This month we’re reading Sula by Toni Morrison, a novel about friendship and betrayal, individual freedom vs. social expectation, and the ways communities can both hold us and cast us out. Flow for the afternoon: • 3:00–4:00 PM — Cookout & Arrival Pull up, grab a plate, meet someone new, reconnect with familiar faces. • 4:00–4:30 PM — Transition + Open Conversation We start easing into the discussion space, letting the book and the day’s themes surface naturally. • 4:30–5:15 PM — Guided Group Discussion Facilitated conversation centered on Sula, with prompts and collective reflection. • 5:15 PM onwards — Back to cookout vibes at Reserved Hanging out at the location, mingling, continuing conversations, letting the afternoon unfold. Come for the food. Stay for the conversation. Leave with community.
