How to Promote an Event on Social Media

The complete playbook for getting people genuinely excited about your event - before, during, and after.

How to Promote an Event on Social Media

You can have the best event in the world and still have empty seats if nobody knows about it. Social media is your most powerful (and cheapest) promotional tool - but only if you use it right.

Here's a practical, no-fluff guide to promoting your event on social media, whether you're running a house party, a live show, a pop-up, or a community gathering.

Start earlier than you think

Most people announce their event too late. Give yourself at least two to three weeks of promotional runway. The earlier you share, the more time people have to plan around it - and the more opportunity you have to build momentum.

A simple pre-event timeline:

  • 2–3 weeks out: Announce the event. Share the link. Create the initial buzz.

  • 1 week out: Post a reminder. Share a behind-the-scenes preview or detail that makes it feel more real.

  • 2–3 days out: Post urgency content - capacity limits, ticket availability, final details.

  • Day of: Post a "doors open" story or countdown. Tag the venue if applicable.

Choose the right platforms

You don't need to be everywhere. Focus on where your audience actually is.

  • Instagram – Best for visual events. Use Stories with a link sticker, Reels for behind-the-scenes content, and feed posts for the official announcement.

  • TikTok – Great for events with a strong visual or entertainment angle. Authentic, low-production content tends to perform better than polished ads.

  • Twitter / X – Useful for community events in niche spaces (tech, comedy, art). The text-first format is good for announcements and engaging with your audience directly.

  • Facebook – Still effective for certain demographics and community groups. Events posted in local Facebook groups can drive significant reach.

  • Group chats – Don't underestimate WhatsApp, iMessage, or Telegram. Sharing your Partiful link in the right group chats can be more effective than any post.

Create content worth sharing

The best event promotion doesn't feel like promotion. It feels like content people actually want to see and share.

Ideas that work:

  • The reveal. Announce the event with a well-designed graphic or a short video that captures the vibe. Your Partiful event page can serve as the landing page.

  • Behind the scenes. Show the planning process - scouting the venue, designing the flyer, setting up the space. People love to feel like insiders.

  • Social proof. Share that tickets are selling, spots are filling, or notable people are coming. Seeing others commit reduces hesitation.

  • Countdowns. Instagram's countdown sticker in Stories creates real urgency and lets followers set a reminder.

  • Guest reposts. When attendees share your event or tag you, repost it. This multiplies reach and validates the event for people on the fence.

Use your event page as a social hub

Every post should link back to a single destination - your event page. This is where the RSVP or ticket purchase happens, and it's what converts interest into attendance.

A Partiful event page is built for this. It's visually customizable, shows who's attending (which creates its own social pull), and lets you send SMS updates to everyone who's RSVP'd. When the event page itself is shareable and social, promotion gets easier - your guests do some of it for you.

Get your attendees to promote for you

The most credible promotion comes from people who are actually going. Make it easy for them to spread the word:

  • Ask early RSVPs to share the event in their own Stories

  • Create a shareable graphic they can repost

  • Give referral incentives - a promo code or free ticket for whoever brings the most guests

  • Tag collaborators, performers, or vendors so they share to their own audiences

Post during and after the event

Social promotion doesn't stop when the event starts. Live content - a Story from the door, a quick clip of the crowd, a performer mid-set - builds FOMO for your next event and keeps your audience engaged.

After the event, post a recap. Thank your attendees. Tag people. Share highlights. This content becomes the foundation for promoting your next one.

One last thing

The best social media promotion is an extension of a genuinely good event. If people had a great time, they'll post about it, share it, and come back next time. Focus on making the event worth talking about - then give people the tools to talk about it.
