10/4 | First Sunday: Dim Sum, Mahjong

Next Sun at 1:45pm · Brooklyn
Growing up in LA, dim sum followed by mahjong was a weekly ritual. A group of five families would gather for dim sum lunch before caravanning to one of our homes for hours of mahjong that stretched into the wee hours of the morning. Inspired by this tradition of ritual and gathering, we're continuing the "First Sundays" series at Nin Hao, with an all-you-can-eat dim sum buffet format. Come join us for an afternoon to learn Hong Kong-style mahjong and connect with friends and neighbors over dim sum and tea. What to Expect: 1:45PM to 2:15PM: Buffet 2:15PM to 2:45PM: Learning fundamentals and then set up your first game 2:45PM to 4:15PM: Guided open play to apply what you've learned Just as I learned this game as a way to hold onto community and tradition, this workshop offers more than just rules and strategy. It's an invitation to embrace the ritual of gathering, playing, and being together. No prior knowledge needed, our workshop is designed for beginners, though experienced players are welcome to join and refresh their skills. 🀄 Guided instruction on Hong Kong style mahjong fundamentals 🀄 Take-home cheat sheet to reference for future games 🀄 Hands-on practice in a supportive environment 🀄 All-you-can-eat dim sum buffet featuring a rotating selection of Nin Hao's classics, including vegetarian-friendly options 🀄 A pot of premium loose leaf Chinese tea to enjoy while you play About Your Instructor: Veronica Chan is the founder of Vermilion Mahjong Club, where she hosts intimate workshops and monthly gatherings to foster connection and community around the mahjong table. She brings a warm, accessible approach to teaching this traditional game, making it approachable for newcomers while honoring its rich cultural heritage. Payment: Your $35 payment today guarantees your spot at the event. Participants will receive a separate restaurant bill of $35 for the dim sum buffet as well as any a la carte drink orders at the end of the afternoon. Tax and gratuity for buffet & drinks is not included. Cancellation Policy: The $35 teaching fee is non-refundable and non-exchangeable, although if you are not able to make it you will not be charged the $35 buffet fee. Be sure to check your calendar before booking. If you're unable to attend, you may transfer your ticket to a friend. Seating: Please let me know in advance if you are coming with other friends so I can try my best to seat you together. The buffet is self-service so you can eat at your own pace throughout the session. Different Mahjong Styles: We will be learning and playing Hong Kong-style (the most popular Chinese mahjong style), not American-style. 3 clues to identify which style is which: American: Sets include Joker tiles Chinese (including Hong Kong): Sets do not include Joker tiles American: Eligible winning hands change annually Chinese (including Hong Kong): Rules and eligible winning hands do not change annually American: Sometimes spelled Mahjongg, with two g's Chinese: Most often spelled Mahjong, with just one gRSVP Here

Feed the Village! Ăn Nhiều

Fri at 7pm · New York
We’re creating a space where people can spend a few hours being authentically loved and giving love. Creating a space that is warm and community is brought together. So many different talents and cravings all put into one table, everyone hoping for a chance to spin the turntable. Food culture is centered around how people eat. How food is shared. Social eating takes place in so many different BIPOC cultures where community and family are at the forefront. Being able to share food with those that you love is not a luxury, but a standard of practice. This is meant to be a table that is created so that everyone has a seat and a plate. Think dinner tables that are too full with dishes meant to be shared, think plates being passed around, think too many chopsticks for the amount of people sitting. Hear the loud chatter of people gathered together, listen to the conversations of the people next to you, feel the warmth of bodies sitting too close together. The first dinner is to honor Jonathan. Everything after is to honor the vision he had. The first dinner is meant to showcase the barebones roots. Basic Vietnamese-inspired menu, mainly shareables and eaten family-style. “Tell me what you eat, and I’ll tell you who you are.” – Jean Anthelme Brillat-SavarinRSVP Here
