Photosynthesis

Wed 7pm · Los Angeles
Photosynthesis is series focused on live experimental electronica with a wide range of emotions and energies. In the past the shows have been curated with artists who specialize in synths, modular, indie bands, acoustic sessions, free jazz, poetic blends and even some dance floor moments. Photosynthesis takes a collaborative approach to curating with 7 Los Angeles music fiends who have a knack for connecting artists and organizing. This time we bring you a curation of Artists brought together through Matthew Mallinger, an artist who has played a few times at Porter Street Studio and an avid listener in the Los Angeles indie electronica world. Matthew Mallinger is a Creative Technologist based in El Sereno California. In addition to his solo audiovisual work & performance, he has more recently begun to expand this work into greater context & collaborations. The subconscious & the natural world are the most commonly recurring focuses within his music & visual art, leaning into abstraction that allows both the artist & viewer to participate in reflective, inward landscapes. He has been an active participant in Deantoni Park’s Technoself School of Philosophy since 2020, which has a large influence on both his approach & output. Some of his recent musical releases include the 2025 solo album ‘Means to a Beginning,’ & ‘Beyond the Flowered Gates’ - a collective record that falls in between experimental, jazz & ambient worlds. Surrounding this record, he has been assembling collective improvised ensembles - most recently performing at 2220 Arts & Archives in Los Angeles alongside Bendik Giske. Topu Lyo is a composer, cellist, and producer whose work explores the emotional and textural possibilities of sound through improvisation, collaboration, and cinematic composition. As one half of the scoring duo Live Footage, he composed the score for internationally recognized projects including the Emmy-nominated Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy. His compositions create atmospheric and minimal sonic landscapes that bridge acoustic performance with experimental production. His artistic practice centers on collaboration as a living process, often merging music with visual art, conversation, and spontaneous creation. Drawing from decades of personal journaling and interdisciplinary exchange, Lyo creates work that reflects memory, vulnerability, and shared human experience. Jonny Arturo is the alias of composer and keyboardist Jonny Stallings Cárdenas. Blending spacey DX7 leads with bubbly Moog textures, his music slips between jazz fusion, synth-pop, experimental improv, and cumbia psicodélica. As a performer-improviser, Jonny has appeared at Sons d'Hiver (Paris), the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Zebulon, Future is Color Studios (San Diego), and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, sharing the stage with artists such as King Britt, Tyshawn Sorey, China Moses, Logan Hone, and Eddie Chacon. His work as a producer-keyboardist is featured on the album "Old Quarters" by Pigimichi, an experimental pop project in collaboration with singer-songwriter Kiki LaPomme. Currently finishing his PhD in music composition at UC San Diego, Jonny's research centers on creative music networks and experimentalisms in Black contemporary opera. He’s worked as many artists, bands, and projects across all genres. His recent solo releases explore experimental electronic/alternative and jazz inspired spaces, an artist whose sound bridges organic warmth with atmospheric, future-leaning production. Formerly releasing music under the moniker Arroyo Low, Sandborg evolved the project into Solar Trees as a way to explore a broader emotional and sonic landscape—one rooted in nature, memory, and the tension between analog imperfection and digital clarity. Dane is also a member of the new future Jazz Quartet Monokon and is a studio manager at the recording studio Earthstar Creation Center in Venice, CA. Nicolas Maldonado: Nicolas Maldonado is a saxophonist, composer, and improviser exploring the intersection of acoustic and electronic sound. Performing on tenor and soprano saxophone, he integrates live electronics to shape spontaneous compositions within an evolving sonic landscape Artwork by Saish K
