Chicago Book Club
Tomorrow at 7pm
· Chicago
Meet in Barbara's Bookstore on Monday, August 24th to discuss Jack Kelly's "The Edge of Anarchy: The Railroad Barons, the Gilded Age, and the Greatest Labor Uprising in America"! Our book club will go from 7pm-8pm. "The Edge of Anarchy" is 20% off at our store all month long if you need to grab a copy. Reading/finishing the book is not required, just come to chat! To get a feel for the book, here's the jacket description: "The dramatic story of the explosive 1894 clash of industry, labor, and government that shook the nation and marked a turning point for America. The Edge of Anarchy by Jack Kelly offers a vivid account of the greatest uprising of working people in American history. At the pinnacle of the Gilded Age, a boycott of Pullman sleeping cars by hundreds of thousands of railroad employees brought commerce to a standstill across much of the country. Famine threatened, riots broke out along the rail lines. Soon the U.S. Army was on the march and gunfire rang from the streets of major cities. This epochal tale offers fascinating portraits of two iconic characters of the age. George Pullman, who amassed a fortune by making train travel a pleasure, thought the model town that he built for his workers would erase urban squalor. Eugene Debs, founder of the nation's first industrial union, was determined to wrench power away from the reigning plutocrats. The clash between the two men's conflicting ideals pushed the country to what the U.S. Attorney General called "the ragged edge of anarchy." Many of the themes of The Edge of Anarchy could be taken from today's headlines--upheaval in America's industrial heartland, wage stagnation, breakneck technological change, and festering conflict over race, immigration, and inequality. With the country now in a New Gilded Age, this look back at the violent conflict of an earlier era offers illuminating perspectives along with a breathtaking story of a nation on the edge." Please also refer this link to anyone you think may be interested in joining the book club or add plus ones if you're bringing a friend. The more the merrier! This book club is moderated by senior bookseller Chris. Please contact Barbara's Bookstore on State with any questions!

Classics Book Club

Meet in Barbara's Bookstore on Friday, August 28th to discuss Mary Shelley's novel "The Last Man"! Our book club will go from 6pm-7pm. "The Last Man" is 20% off at our store all month long if you need to grab a copy. Reading/finishing the book is not required, just come to chat! To get a feel for the book, here's the jacket description: "Written while Mary Shelley was in a self-imposed lockdown after the loss of her husband and children, and in the wake of intersecting crises including the climate-changing Mount Tambora eruption and a raging cholera outbreak, The Last Man (1826) is the first end-of-mankind novel, an early work of climate fiction, and a prophetic depiction of environmental change. Set in the late twenty-first century, the book tells of a deadly pandemic that leaves a lone survivor, and follows his journey through a post-apocalyptic world that’s devoid of humanity and reclaimed by nature. But rather than give in to despair, Shelley uses the now-ubiquitous end-times plot to imagine a new world where freshly-formed communities and alternative ways of being stand in for self-important politicians serving corrupt institutions, and where nature reigns mightily over humanity—a timely message for our current era of climate collapse and political upheaval. Brimming with political intrigue and love triangles around characters based on Percy Shelley and scandal-dogged poet Lord Byron, the novel also broaches partisan dysfunction, imperial warfare, refugee crises, and economic collapse—and brings the legacy of her radically progressive parents, William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, to bear on present-day questions about making a better world less centered around “man.” Shelley’s second major novel after Frankenstein, The Last Man casts a half-skeptical eye on romantic ideals of utopian perfection and natural plenitude while looking ahead to a greener future in which our species develops new relationships with non-human life and the planet." Please also refer this link to anyone you think may be interested in joining the book club or add plus ones if you're bringing a friend. The more the merrier! This book club is moderated by senior bookseller Chris and bookseller Bella. Please contact Barbara's Bookstore on State with any questions!
