BEACONS: Paintings by Nathaniel J. Bice Opening

Fri, Feb 6 6pm · San Francisco
Join us for the opening reception of BEACONS, the first solo exhibition by San Francisco–based artist Nathaniel J. Bice. BEACONS centers the glowing signs and places that help define San Francisco’s queer cultural landscape. Through paintings of iconic signage, especially neon, the exhibition honors spaces that offer warmth, visibility, and a sense of belonging. From the Castro Theater and Twin Peaks Tavern to Oasis, Martuni’s, Orphan Andy’s, and more, these works capture not just what we see on the street, but what these places mean to the people who gather around them. Opening during the Castro Art Walk and just as the Castro Theater lights up again, BEACONS holds space for mixed feelings. There is joy in restoration and renewed brightness, and also real concern about access, displacement, and the future of small neighborhood businesses. This exhibition honors that tension while centering the legacy of community spaces like Castro Coffee and Castro Nail Salon AND The Castro Theatre. "What’s Your Sign?" During the reception, visit our interactive station and share your favorite San Francisco neon sign and why it matters to you. Whether it marks a memory, a first night out, or a place you return to again and again, your story becomes part of the BEACONS experience. Limited release prints of the Queer A.F. neon sign original painting by Nathaniel J. Bice will be available for a special reduced price during the opening night only. These are sure to go fast and some will have a surprise inside! This opening kicks off two months of satellite events at Queer Arts Featured that connect to the themes of BEACONS, including community, visibility, nightlife, and craft. More details coming soon. Stay tuned! As always, this event is open to the public and NOTAFLOF (no one turned away for lack of funds); donations to Queer Arts Featured are always warmly accepted to keep our space thriving and collaborators paid fairly. $10 suggested. Come celebrate the signs that keep our city alight, and the spaces that continue to guide us home.
