QUEER PICTURE DAY

Sun, Aug 16 at 2pm · Oakland
QUEER PICTURE DAY 💌 by OMG Visuals I’ve had this idea in my mind for years and I’m finally bringing it to life. A lot of queer people never really got the chance to fully express ourselves as our fully realized selves growing up. So I wanted to create a Picture Day for us now. A space to document who we are, who we’ve become, and the versions of ourselves we dreamed about for so long. Come in your best whatever-that-means-to-you. Dress up, be soft, be bold, be sexy, be playful, be fully yourself. I want to capture the queer joy we carry and preserve this moment in time together. This will be a community portrait event with a backdrop, music, candid moments, and eventually a yearbook-style archive with “Most Likely To…” superlatives and community pages spotlighting the people and spaces that shape us. My dream is to make this a yearly series — something we can return to every year to see who we are becoming. We’ll be at my favorite bar in downtown Oakland during Pride with a DJ, good energy, beautiful people, and room to connect. Come ready to take portraits, meet new people, and be part of something special.

Blindfolded Team Art Competition (Prizes for Charity!)

Sun at 2pm · San Francisco
Welcome to the Blindfolded Team Drawing Competition! The rules are simple. 1. Grab a partner to make a team of two 2. One teammate wears a blindfold (something the sleeves of a hoodie) and grabs a paper and pencil. The other sees a drawing on their phone. 3. The seeing eye teammate gives verbal directions to the blindfolded teammate to recreate the drawing to the best of their ability. 4. For the teammate wearing the blindfold, no peeking at the drawing allowed! For the teammate seeing the drawing, no physical contact with your teammate allowed! Referees will be checking for these. The drawing that looks closest to the template in appearance, style, or general style will win! You do not have to be a good artist to win; I will be judging very subjectively 😊 There will be 3 rounds. ‘I’m So Happy You Are Here’ Group Show & 10 Year Anniversary Party!

Sat at 6pm · San Francisco
This August, Glass Rice turns TEN! A decade of exhibitions, unwavering passion, expanding support, and a gallery that’s grown up on Sutter Street. We’re marking this era with ‘I’m So Happy You Are Here’, a group show bringing together some of the artists who’ve shaped our program alongside new voices we’re excited to introduce. For the poster, we asked Lane Fujita to distill ten years into a single image: “This poster is an ode to time, and a reflection on the ten years that Glass Rice has been in operation. A decade feels at once like an eternity and a blip, and the gallery is now firmly somewhere between. This informs the primary tone of the poster which sits just above 50% grey; it’s light enough to have emerged from the void but there’s still more to be realized. Much like the gallery logo, each element carries an echo, an acknowledgment of the lasting impressions left by the work that has graced the gallery space and the words exchanged about it. The vibrant blots of color reference the afterimage you see when closing your eyes after viewing a bright light. They’re derived from archival images of the gallery both on Sutter and its original location in the Design District. Lastly, the image at the center is a photo of the ceiling at the current space, an appreciation of the light that bathes the space and gives visibility to artists and their work within, an elegant reminder of the founding and forever mission of Glass Rice.” Join us for the opening night of ‘I’m So Happy You Are Here’ on August 1, 6–8 PM! We’re teaming up with our neighbors at The Bird Cage next door for a celebratory block party - food, drinks, and tunes flowing all night. See you there! Participating Artists: Adrian Kay Wong Alyssa Mariah Aviles Angela Zirbes Anatole Heger Carla Petelski Caroline Pinney Christopher M. Tandy Maja Dlugolecki Matthew Walton Maya Fuji Michelle Favin Nico Corona
